Software or script to manipulate images?

I just signed up for an account and this is my first question, I would give more points if I had them.

I have a need for software (purchased or open source) that can manipulate pictures (Like photoshop etc..)

What I am looking to do, is for this script/ software whatever, to take an uploaded image, resize it and rename it based on my specifications and save it to a directory, discarding the original.

This needs to be server based, and I will have friends and family that dont know much about computers uploading their digital pictures into a web interface, then I want this program to shrink them proportiantly, rename to a gif and save it.

I am using a Linux server, so mysql and php will be the preferred languages / storage options.

Any ideas where I can find a program like this, or how I could get started??

Thank you,

    Hi GRDT,
PHP has specific functions to manipulate several image formats. Have a look to these previous questions to illustrate:

Rather than writing your own thing, have you looked at Gallery? it does lots of this kind of thing, and has a very nice DHTML cropping interface (just drag an area and hit crop!).

Thank you all, gallery really does what I was looking for, but the php info will be helpful as well.

    Thanks again.
