startup glitch, black screen, problem with radeon 9200?

Hello,

I seem to be having a problem with my display driver and I haven't a clue what to do about it...

When I start up my computer (Sony Vaio s-150,running XP Home),it seems the monitor doesn't communicate with the computer; i.e. the hd whirs and the power indicator lights up, but the screen remains black.  So I hold down the power switch until it turns off and reboot. Sometimes I do this 13-14 times before the screen will finally light up and Windows will start.
  Once it gets going, it runs fine.(although once in a very long while, when I'm watching a dvd, the screen will freeze up and I will have to reboot (this is infrequent))

Sometimes, when Windows starts up I will receive this request to send an error report:

Computer restarted after an unexpected shutdown. Microsoft windows detected a possible device failure.

The driver for the display device was unable to complete a drawing operation. Please check with the device manufacturer for a driver update.

The display driver for Mobility RADEON 9200 seems to be responsible for this system instability.

Help, this is driving me nuts!

Thanks,Molly

Hi Molly

You can try by uninstalling and reinstalling the latest driver for you graphics card
(right-click my computer-->properties-->hardware-->device manager-->display adaptors-->right click radeon 9200-->uninstall.)
Get the latest driver from the sony support site and install it.
Also, try and disconnect and connect any cables for you LCD.  It might be that there is a loose connection somewhere.  If the computer is still under warranty, take it to your distributor before opening anything.

does the computer work fine with an external monitor?  if so, you may have an lcd issue, either lcd or the inverter or a cable to the lcd.  the best thing to do if you're still under warranty is go back to the manufacturer.  otherwise, you can switch off and disconnect all power before reseating/replacing all the lcd cable and/or connectors, and/or replacing the inverter unit located below the lcd just above the hinges.  spares are available in repair centres or even on eBay
