Can I use any SATA devices with my existing 4 PATA HD's?

I'm not too familiar with SATA yet but haven't been able to find the answer to my specific situation.  My mb supports both SATA and PATA.  I have 4 PATA drives installed - 2 per channel.  I want to find out if I can also install a SATA device (cd/dvd burner).  Thanks...

Thanks - just wanted to make sure the different channels wouldn't trip over one another or some such.

I would watch out because some controllers will only support hard drives. I don't think this is a problem with intel controllers.
Thanks for the tip.  I'll have to check tonight to be certain but I think all the controllers on the board are intel.  Just wanted to see if I could even entertain the notion or just stick with a USB2 external drive.
