Unlocking Mcafee viruscan's 7.0 user interface

Someone that no longer works with me has locked the Mcafee user interface and we cant disable the anti-virus to install software.  The software requires virusscan to be disabled and the user interface is locked.  We dont know the password and Mcafee doesnt have much infor on this.

I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

U can try to uninstall McAfee Virusscan 7.0, and then reinstall it and set your own password if u like. Since it is not possible to bypass the password. (Only by cracking your own pc) Then you can disable the virusscanner and install your software. I had  the same problem, and it worked for me.

Good Luck,

That did work on other systems that we had.  We didnt have the software available this time.  What we did was to find the UIP in the registry and change the hash to a system that we knew the password on.  Of course you have to have at least power user rights to accomplish this.  I found that it might be a good thing to disable registry editing to only admins to prevent this sort of bypass.  There was an exploit posted somewhere on the web about this.  But your answer did and would work so I will accept it partially.

Oh good thing you wrote this, couse I thought the password was encrypted based on your pc configuration. I thought; He! is McAfee they are here to prevent hacking and stuf, and that they knew something about protecting passwords. I guess not then, if it was this easy to bypass the pasword. Ofcourse you need another machine with the same VC and know the pass, but that can be done easy.

Thanx anyway by the feedback,
Terentius

yes you do need the other password if you want to use a password but you can delete the hash all together and set UIPmode to 0 and that will unlock the interface.  This is not that major of a concern because this will only affect the viruscan and not other security features.
