Outlook 2003 hangs when browsing to file to attach in an email

When I am in Outlook 2003 and go to attach a file into an email, when you hit the paper clip(insert file),and then hit the drop down to navigate to where the file is, Outlook hangs for about a minute and then recovers, but at each folder level it hangs again.  It will say on the Outlook title bar, Outlook (not responding). It has service pack 1 installed. I have run a repair and I have also uninstalled/reinstalled Office.
Does anyone know what is causing this? Any suggestions are very much appreciated!

What the outlook.pst file that is in your outlook 2003 created in outlook 2003 or previous version ?

Can you temporarily turn off anti-virus , firewall and any anti-spam software in your machine and check if that would help.

Do you have any add-in installed in outlook and if yes , can you disable it and check

Have you tried to create a new profile in outlook going to control panel > mail > show profiles, imported the PST there and checked how it goes ?

Have you tried to repair your outlook pst .
Repair PST : http://www.slipstick.com/problems/scanpst.htm

go to start --> run --> C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\Mapi\1033
in that open scanpst file
Once it is open , browse and give the location of the outlook.pst file

Sunray, thanks for your suggestions. I will try these and post the results. It sounds to me that your leaning towards a suspicious PST file.

Sunray, my apologies for taking so long to close this. After upgrading the McAfee AV from 7 to 8, the problem has resolved itself. You were on to something while asking if the AV had been disabled. I never tried that.
