Netgear Router WGT634U and web pages I am hosting not working port forwarding? what else?

I just bought this router installed it and now my websites i was hosting for a friend are no longer working. I went into port forwarding and forwarded port 80 to the computer (192.168.1.2) running IIS. When I type in the web address theshacknj.com  it asks me for the password to the router, I have entered the user name/password and it brings me to the router config page which i usually type 192.168.1.1  which also still works.. What is going wrong?? Do i have a setting wrong in my router config? i had this web pagr running perfectly with my other router before this one and I did not change any settings in IIS or anywhere else, only added this router.  Here is a link to the router http://kbserver.netgear.com/products_automatic/WGT634U.asp  thanks in advance!!

using static ip's for the internal network? I assume that 192.168.1.2 is the ip of the mchine hosting IIS?
it appears the dns is resolviong to your router
it appe4ars you have remote admin enabled on the router

yes static ips for internal  I am pretty sure... 192.168.1.2 is ip hosting with IIS. remote admin? How do i shut that off?>
Internet IP Address
Get Dynamically From ISP

Domain Name Server (DNS) Address
Get Automatically From ISP

those are my settingsd
I think i know what it is   My router is set up  Use Router as DHCP Server   I dont think i want it using that option?? correct?
sounds like you may have fat fingered a number, go back into the router and triple check the port forwarding, and look around for shutting off the remote admin
I don't think so, but you can shut off the internal dhcp server
i triple checked the port forwarding... it is set ---  forwarding port 80 to 80  HTTP to 192.168.1.2    and I have Use router as DHCP server enabled, for some reason i think i want that off???  I am looking for the remote admin option... not seeing it anywhere...  I see   "Turn Remote Management On"   i do not have a check in that box..
my friend says it the site is working now that i turned of the dhcp server...  let me know if this site works.  www.theshacknj.com
Yep works now. I have seen some routers not forward the ports if dhcp is enalbed
I cant get to the web page from any of my machines within the network....  one computer running windows 2003, two running xp.... I dont know much about windows server, just startiing to learn, however everywithing was setup fine before i got this router... I think the router is trying to assign IP,s and so is the server?? not quite surte... But if someone is getting to my website from the outside world (outsdie my network) then maybe it is some type of  remote admin option, but i am just not seeing it....
No, the router probably doesn't support LAN loopback
to get to the site internally type the internal ip
http://192.168.1.2
should bring up the page
well i am using host headers so i have two sites.... i did not have to do this when i had my other netgear wirelesss router, did not have to enter in the local ip.. Also. now that i turned off the dhcp server option in the router, my xbox can not connect to the internet... I think this is the case becasue it has no ip... My other computers are logging into the domain on the win 2003 server computer.. I think this computer might be acting as the dns server.. I really dont know how to check... Anyway, i am going to turn dhcp back on in router config... let me know if you have any other suiggestions...  i think i should be able to see my web pages by going to the correct url  without entering local ip... this router has to be able to handle that...
Well I have a M$ MN-700 wireless router, and I hos an ftp site, and can't get to it from inside the LAN using the external ip, it doesn't support the LAN loopback, I have to use the internal address
the way to check to see what the dns servers are on any machine is to go to a prompt and type
ipconfig /all
it will list the ip's of the dns servers
Connection Specific DNS siuffix is blank when i enter ipconfig.... now my xbox will not work.... now i am having more serious problems then expected... do you have any idea what is going on here?? I remeber changing some setting in my old router a few months ago.. It has to do with assignning ip addreess... I thought it was the dhcp server thing, but xbox still doesnt work!!!! AHHHHHH i am deliriously tired too... i really weant to get this up and running...
should see something like this
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 5:

        Connection-specific DNS Suffix  . :
        Description . . . . . . . . . . . : CNet PRO200 PCI Fast Ethernet Adapte
r #3
        Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : 00-80-AD-86-D9-4B
        Dhcp Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : No
        IP Address. . . . . . . . . . . . : 192.168.2.10
        Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.255.0

                                            206.141.xx.xx
nope this is what it looks like (below) .... something is wrong.... but everything seems to be working, i just know this isnt set up right... i think i have my domain giving out ips and the router   its a dns or dhcp issue is what i am thinking

You can only have one dhcp server per scope, either the domain controller, or the router
If the router is acting as the dhcp server, then the clients will not get the correct dns info for the dc, and will not be able to find it
I would set up the dc to be the dhcp server, and have it give out the router's ip as the gateway, or use static ip's for the internal network. (I usually use static ip's on small networks, I like to have control over who gets what ip)
I really do not know how to set this up. I would like to have ti working the way you said you usally use...  "(I usually use static ip's on small networks, I like to have control over who gets what ip)"  How can I set it up so I have static IP's, i would like to thave them also, for more reasons then one. let me know if you have any instructions on how to set up the dhcp server on the dc.. It's possible that I have that set up already.. Also, once i set that up, (hopefully you can walk me through it) I assume I disable the dhcp option within the routers config.... Thanks again for all your time,  you will get the points as soon as I get this up and runnning...
First, let's not worry about the points, the important thing is to get you up and running
Now, is this a domain or peer to peer
there is a big difference, just because you have a server doesn't make it a domain
it is set up as a domain.... I am actually at work right now, i can access most settings at home, i have vnc installed,  but i will not be able to reset the router or anything like that.. But yes ithe computer with win server 2003 is setup as a domain..
actually, I cant even vnc to my computer, just tried, I must not have opened the ports..
OK, now aI need to know what the internal ip of the server is (sand if you have dns setup and running on it, with forwarders setup (to resolve external ip's)
internal ip is  192.168.1.2      i dont know if i have dns setup on the server,  where can i look to determine this information?? i am actually taking a course  all of next week that is supposed to teach me some of this stuff.. I know dns and dhcp is part of a days module during the class.. Anything you want me to check for you, just tell me exactly where to look and what to look for.. thanks and sorry I am not very smart in these areas..  Getting ready to learn the server technology...
OK, then we want the machine to have ip's of
192.168.1.(3-354)
mask 255.255.255.0
defalt gateway 192.168.1.1
now the dns setup will be tricky, depending on if you  have dns setup on your server, and forwarders
the easiest way would be to use your isp's dns, and use hosts files on the internal machines for local resolution, but that;s not the correct way to do it. the correct way is to setup dns on the server with forwarders
this site has great info on how to setup and configure
http://www.petri.co.il/install_and_configure_windows_2003_dns_server.htm
i will try this later when i get home...
OK, I should be back on around 6:30 pm est
I know this sounds really bad, but, I can not follow these directions, they seem like they are missing a lot of the finer details. I would be willing to let you vnc to my computer to check everything out... I think i can trust most of the people on EE. I;m sure most of us have some ethics... I really dont have a clue to what is going on with DNS.. Also, seems like everything is running well over here except for the fact that  I cant view web pages that are on my IIIS.. Also, I think my computer are disconnecting periosdically, not very often but i have seen it happen..

well both computer lose connection to the server every once in awhile....
ALso, it seems like my network speed is REALLY slow.. like if  i want to transfer a file from the server to my desktop  it takes 10 mins now  rather then 1 min... I also noticed in my wireless icon in the taskbar   it says 18mbps   it used to say 54 before i got this new router... Any ideas??? This router is way to hard to configure properly..  I just wish it was as easy as my last one...
what protocol is the wap.nic using 11b or 11g?
G is faster, and some WAP's use g enhanced (special compression)
I'd say it the new router
just out of curiousity, why did  you swtich routers?
i switched routers becasue my other one doesnt work after i did a firmware upgrade. The new router has both G and B..  I have it set up to use both G and B... this is the router I have...  http://kbserver.netgear.com/products_automatic/WGT634U.asp    Maybe i need to turn it to G only? i wish i just replaced my old router with the same one and then i would not have had any of these problems... My computers are a mess now.. Would you be willing to vnc to my computer just to check out my settings and what not?? its cool if you dont want to.. Just trying to make this easy as possible and let you see whats actually configed and whats not...
The MA prohibits me from doing any of the work off site (including vncing into your network)
what make was the old router, a linksys?
sounds like you are 11b
You can try a firmware update on the netgear (You may be a little fearful of that, I understand)

>>Maybe i need to turn it to G only?
do your cards support it? If so, try it
i did the latest firmware update on my new router.. The opld router was also a netgear  WGR614  it was also both bands g and B... and i had it set to use both in the router config, just like i have this new one set.. Both of my wireless cards are wireless G compatible, the third computer is the one running win server 2003, and that is connected by a rj45 cable.  maybe i could take screen shots and post them on a website for you to look at.. I can take screen shots of the wireless options page or something.. I can take screen shots of whatever you want... I think i just hit CTRL-PrntScr  or Shift printscreen
using the same channel, SSID and wep/wpa?
in wireless network connection properties where can i change the channel or see what channel it is configured for.. I see a key index option... it is currently set to 1..  the channel is set to 11 in the wireless cofig of the router..
since it is connecting we can assume they are on the same channel
if you go to network properties, and click on theconne4ction, and choose properties, then configure (for the adapter) it should tell you all the info

>>This router is way to hard to configure properly..
the router doeumentation should explain it all to  you (the manual)
did you make hosts file entries like I told you (to resolve internally) and still have the external dns servers
yeah all set to same channel..  I did not make a hosts file either.. Plus i have 2 web sites I am hosting, so how would a host file even determine which website i want to come up. i though i would have to enter the ip of the computer with IIS, now how would that determine the host headers? before it determined by each domain name the web user was requesting, ie www.theshacknj.com    anyways, my main concern now is getting the speed back to 54mbs  not 18 what is set at now.. Then i would like to figure out how to use this host file to allow me to view my web pages i am hosting. Thanks again for all your help.... I just hope we can get to the bottom of this...
what level encryption are you using 64 bit (WEP) or 128 (WPA)?
what is the signal strength (the lower the strength, the lower the connection rate)
check the settings for the router and the card for any diiferences from the other router
router located in the same spot as the old one?
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101160.asp
http://kbserver.netgear.com/kb_web_files/n101374.asp
is enable the 108 mbps settings checked (on the router)
I am using 128 encyrption with a passphrase which creates a key which is basically the password, when i set up each wireless card I had to enter this passphrase.. If i entered the wrong passphrase the cards woul dhave no signal or connection.  the signal strength is 100%, (about 4 feet from the router is where all my computer are located)  Router is same spot as old one. I do believe the "enable 108mbs is checked"  is that not supposed to be checked?? Thanks!!! I hope thats it... i can test when i get home today... Today i will be home by like 2pm est... early day!
>>enable 108mbs is checked
if checked try unchecking, and if unchecked try checking
ok I went into the wireless pci card config and i had the options to force it to 54 and also put it to G only... I will test transfers when i get home.. hopefully everything will be a liitle faster then before...  Still have that issue with the web pages.. also, i have a few avatars I am using, they wont load up either when i am home.. the avaatars are stored on my web pages..  And my web server seems to be painfully slow   that computer is using a rj45 cable to connect to the router, so it shouldnt be too slow... Arrrrrgh, at least i got the 18 back to 54... One problem solved, maybe i will try this hosts file thing,  just dont know how its going to work...  using host headers with websites becasue i am hosting 2 sites.. so how would that work with host headers?? Is it pretty quick fix?  I have edited my hosts file before in order to block ads on the internet.  I am using a crazy host file i downloaded off the internet, it has just about every advertising ip in it in order to block the ads from coming into my browser.. So I am familiar with the hosts file a little bit..  thanks
>>using host headers with websites becasue i am hosting 2 sites.. so how would that work with host headers
it should, since the server handles the host headeers, and dns just resolves to ip addresses and the ip's are the same
example
123.456.78.90    mydomain.com
123.456.78.90    otherdomain.com
then the host headers do the job of directing to which site
is there any tests out there that i could check my network speed... not the actual internet speed but transferring files within the network... also, with the host file, all i have to do it put in my ip that is hosting the website just liek ytou have it... for example

192.168.1.2   www.theshacknj.com

just drop that line into my hosts file??? Ok thanks
>>192.168.1.2   www.theshacknj.com
yep
ok i think this looks like everything is up to speed.... let me know what you think... also, edited the hosts file and now i can get to the web pages...

actually, is that kind of slow?? I did it from the laptop with wireless g linksys card and connected to the wired computer running server...
It got a little faster -

But from what i read in the read me, i am thinking my computers should be going faster,  read below..  but i guess his setup is different then mine, i am using a router...  but my computer are much faster then his, those things were old.... maybe i am reading all the data wrong... thanks again...

Note that winsock seems to take quite some CPU resources on high-speed
connections. I got ~4 MB/s max on a Intel Pentium 133, and ~7 MB/s
on an AMD K6 200, using a Intel Pentium Pro 200 server with NT 4.0 Server
as the other host. I got a report that two Pentium 200 servers running
NT 4.0 server had 10 MB/s on a direct connection (server to server, no
hub or switch).

Netcps use a normal TCP/IP connection, pumping data without any disk
access. The source code is attached.

Netcps was something I wrote in a hurry. It should be useful for testing
networks, and the performance of hubs, switches and routers. The
program is targeted towards my needs, and have no fancy features.
The program should however be useful for network professionals. It's
quite small and easy to use :-)
But he is using 100mbit connections (about half of the 54 mbit)
so my connection looks ok?? I still think it is a little slow, but thats ok..
It looks oK to me, but I will run the netcps on my wireless (when my wife gets off the other macihine LOL)
Glad I could help!
here is mine
