I'm thinking about creating a network here at home with a server and a cisco router for educational purposes.  What would i need to get and learn to achieve this?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

What exactly is that 'Educational purpose' ? Do u want to learn networking, routers.. etc.. then get a CCNA self help book and that would give you the basic information.
But you would need atleast
1) Router
2) A couple of systems
3) Network Cards
4) Cabling
