XML and shell script

Could a bash script read the output from a XML page?
We have an web based API that will allow us to output data in XML form....
http://domain.com/cgi-bin/config_get.cgi?variable=mta_relay_domain
I'd like have a bash script that reads this data.
Will this be possible? If so how would I do this?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

It's easy enough to read the data, but processing it is something that you really don't want to do with a shell script.

You can use wget, curl, lynx or similar to read the data.
