I have 3 pcs connected through a router, using optonline.  I need to move 1 of the pcs, but the wireless connection won't reach to the new location.  Optonline is telling me that even with my own new cable modem, they won't activate it without charging a 2nd monthly fee of $50!!! That makes no sense at all - there is no increased bandwith use on our part - just need a modem to reach what we were already getting with a wireless connection.  What to do?

You can get another wireless access point and use it as a repeater to extend the wireless signal.

Would this solution give me just about the same strength as the direct access with the modem?

Well, anytime you start throwing repeaters/extenders into the mix, performance is sacrificed but you still should have plenty of bandwidth to cover the 1.5 or 3mbps internet connection you have.
