installing & using maven

I'm trying to build a program using Maven. The source code for this program came with all of the necessary maven xml files. I just need to figure out how to install Maven, and run it. Ideally I would be able to invoke Maven through Eclipse. It seems that there is a Mavin eclipse plugin. I downloaded it from http://maven.apache.org/reference/plugins/eclipse/index.html, but it is just a jar file, and I have no idea of what to do with it.  Usually I just dump plugins into the eclipse/plugins directory, but these plugins are always folders rather than .jar files. There is seemingly is no basic documentation that accompanies the plugin.

I also tried to use the Windows installer to put Maven on my system. However, the installer did not but any executable named Maven in my path, so I'm not really sure what I'm suppose to do after running the installer. I guess I would prefer that the Eclipse Mavin plugin work, but if not, I'd appreciate some help finding the Maven executable and adding it to my path.

Thank you!

Was it maven-eclipse-plugin-1.9.jar you downloaded?  I think that what you are after is mevenide.update-0.3.0_E3.1.M2+.zip (provided you are using an up to date release 3 of Eclipse).

Have a look at the following link:
http://mevenide.codehaus.org/mevenide-ui-eclipse/update/index.html

And download the "big zip archive", this contains your "plugins" and "features" folders.  Simply copy these to the eclipse folder and you're away!

However, and you may already have done this, but you will need to install Maven first, this can be downloaded from:
http://maven.apache.org/start/download.html
