Problem with PPPoE

I current have Roaring Penguin PPPoE running on my server, and it's working fine.  I am trying to switch servers though, so I installed Roaring Penguin PPPoE on the new server.  The installation process went fine, but adsl-start wont connect.  It just waits a little while, then says TIMED OUT.

Now I'm pretty sure that everything in pppoe.conf is correct since I used the same settings that were on the original server.  What could cause pppoe to not connect?

It said:

This system lacks kernel support for PPP.  This could be because
the PPP kernel module could not be loaded, or because PPP was not
included in the kernel configuration.  If PPP was included as a
module, try `/sbin/modprobe -v ppp'.  If that fails, check that
ppp.o exists in /lib/modules/`uname -r`/net.
See README.linux file in the ppp distribution for more details.

Now do I have to include PPP support as a module, or can I just build it into the kernel?  What options do I need to set in the kernel to provide proper support?  I cant seem to find the README.linux file in my ppp distribution.
