How do I maintain a static table header in a scrollable table in Internet Explorer

I'd been looking for this solution also, all over the Web. I was excited to see a relatively simply and easy fix......however... I tried the version below and found that when viewing in IE, regardless of resolution, if you moved the browser scrollbar (not the scrollable table), the headers went out of kilter. Work perfectly fine is every other browser besides IE.

I was looking for a definitive fix for the code above. I believe raj3060, who participated in the original question https://www.experts-exchange.com/questions/21137924/How-do-I-align-columns-from-one-table-with-another-DIV-HTML-JSP-JAVA-BEAN.html#12754587,  has a fix for this code base....
The other looks like a rather old hack involving layers.
This is the modern cross-browser approach:

This handles the cross-browser issues by supporting the superior standards compliant Moz way, and using the IE conditional hacks to play with the HTML a little.  To get the columns variable width for IE you have to do some scripting, but it gets them pretty close.  It will probably take some fine tuning adjustments of a few pixels on some of the columns to get it exact for IE.  Note the strict doctype.

I haven't tested this at all, so I wouldn't know, but will this solution keep the columns aligned with their respective heading? That was the origional problem that I had set out to solve in the previous question.
For Mozilla, Firefox, Netscrap, and most other standards compliant browsers the column widths are locked in because it is a single table and only the tbody scrolls.  For it the script will set the widths to what IE thinks is the correct width.  Infortunately if there are any borders, its rendering box bug may put them off by a few pixels and you may have to apply offsets to get it exact.


We could probably try it with set experession as well, but as I recall that has the same problem plus the expression did not always get eveluated on a change.  However I think the lat time I played with it was before SP1 or SP2, s it might be fixed by now.

I'm going to play with the offsets a little later and see if that doesn't help. If you see anything, please comment. otherwise, when I return from work, I'll probably accept this answer..

I've been playing with my test page, and I have it just about there. Not out by more than 2 pixels on hasny column. I made a couple of changes in the script and then I set the paddin gon the cells to zero.

I tried playing with the border-collapse and margins but they did not do anything to help.

I didn't have any trouble with I.E. displaying correctly via the JSP version. FYI: to determine the browser type I did the following in JAVA. Perhaps you can convert it to javascript:
