microsoft installer problem- internal error 2329 - access to c:\config.msi\filename

I have been having a problem recently with the MSI. I though upgrading from 2000 to XP Pro would solve it by getting MSI 3.o. I really do not know if it is installed. Any way. I run through an installation of some expert software (globalmapper), it runs through what seems to be most of the install and then this error pops up and the isnstallation reverses out and apologises. I have tried to change the attributes in the directory above and it didn't work. Any of this sound familiar?

Hello danziegler =)

Windows Installer 3.0 comes with SP2... you can download it from here if you are not running SP2 already :)

I havent' tried it as the original adminsitrator but I am logged in with administrative priveldges. I will double check all that.
It had occurred with other installs but I was successful in installing another program that HAD given me similar problems.
so have you installed the Windows Installer 3.0 ??
I have tried but it said that the service pack is newer and it wasn't needed.
is the problem fixed ??
No. I guess there are some solutions in your KB that show how to uninstall MSI - but they look time consuming.
If you want, I can let you take control of my machine via filesanywhere.com to have a look.
the why did you accept the answer..... you accpet a comment and grade the question only after you get the solution to your problem :)

anyways did you try to create a new account and checked there?
and we dont uninstall Windows Installer.....we repair it as described here >> http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;315346

And sorry but i cannot use any other service for helping.... :)
my apologies for not understanding the rules of the website.

I did not try a new account. I did check that I had administrative rights.
that's no problem..... :)
but can you plzz try creating the new user..... i know the present user has the administrative rights.... but may be there is some problem with it..... i mean if its possible for you :)
Same error with a new user with admin rights.
ok dan when you says "I have tried to change the attributes in the directory above "
do you mean that you checked the permissions for this folder that the present user has full rights over it ??
yes. I also tried to change thee read only status. But it will not change since it is a system directory.
I am just about at wits end and need somebody to fix this. What other resources would you recommend?
hmmmmm have you tried the fix from my second link...... ??
and dont try to change the read only status.... just in its Security tab, if you have full rights then its enough!
yes I have tried it.
ok tell me.... when you open C: drive..... you see a Config.msi folder...... right ??
delete this folder to recycle bin.... restart and now run the setup again from the program cd and check if same error ??
I tried that although I did not restart. The installer recreates the directory and I get the same error. It is noted that 2329 is a delete file problem. (internet has been down)
Here is the tale end of one of the files in config.msi directory that i believe is logging the install.

The error was related to the last file mentioned 6e22da.rbf

That file has 0 bytes.
The log file is then erased but the file mentioned above remains.
Have you tried to install this software on any other WinXP machine which was not upgraded from a previous OS but was installed as a fresh installation...... can it be installed there ??
I have resolved the issue. I removed 3200 spyware pieces from the computer (Ad-Aware). That didn't do it BUT I also removed the AFA filtering  and internet protection software programs. It seems that's what did it. i have resumed the use of Panda Antivirus and firewall. Everything is up and running and I have been able to install and uninstall all that I need to. Thanks for your time and effor ton this issue. I will submit another question about my wife's computer next. Hoefully this won't be as cryptic.

now that's something unique..... :)
