XP Sp2 - I get urlmon.dll error

I just finished going through the sp2 upgrade on my xp pro computer, and it gave me a message that said everything went fine, but as it did the restart, i get an error message.  The message is something like this: " The urlmon.dll is possibly corrupted.  The header checksum does not match the checksum on file"  (this message flashed pretty quick, so the wording might not be exact)  This message appears after the Windows XP flash comes up.  The operating system never comes up.  I tried safe mode with no luck.  I imagine i would have to update my reg files, but how can i get to a command prompt if the computer does not let me?

thanks

Hello gonzojoe =)

Did you upgrade a previous windows version to WinXP SP2 with a SP2 CD or just updated and installed SP2 from windows update ??
and are you sure that the filename is really urlmon.dll which is giving that error ??

it first reads c0000221 bad image checksum...(remember it flashes and dissappears quick).  As for the urlmon.dll, i do read it.;
>> it first reads c0000221 bad image checksum
this is the hard drive error..... =\ you didn't tell me that you updated to SP2 or upgraded to XP SP2 ??
coz if you had XP and applied SP2 then may be we can try to uninstall it :-?

How to remove Windows XP Service Pack 2 from your computer
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=875350
Just upgrade Windows XP to itself :-)

Reboot the machine, once in Windows (when halted), press control, alt and delete, kill the arb apps which are running (ANY of them, except for task man).

Shove the Windows XP CD in there, then click on 'NEW TASK', browse to the setup.exe on the CD, and then start the installation process. When given the choice you want to UPGRADE your operating system. This will restore your Windows, as it was (with all apps) to the versions of inf, dll and other files which came with your XP.

This is a definate

It never gets to Windows.
you have to get in Recovery Console by booting with the WinXP CD in order to uninstall SP2 :)

I have a second problem, for some reason the administrator password does not work.  Not sure why.  So is there any other way other that restore to bring the computer back with all the apps and files?

yeah, i tried blank as a password.  I also used the linux password changer and i have changed it to blank and still nothing.
try the above utility and dont change it to blank this time.....

if you cannot manage to get in Recovery Console, then use either of these CDs to boot the system with them..... then from there either you can use System Restore, can change adminsitrator password, or can try to uninstall SP2 !!

Ok, I changed the password to "test", and still, it did not accept the password under the recovery console.  I have a EBCD - Emergency boot cd.  I can boot up to it, and that is what i have been using for changing my password.  Should i try one of the other cd's you suggested or is there something else i can do from EBCD besides trying to change my password?
thanks

If instead of choosing "R", if i press "Enter" , will this option delete all my apps and files?
on the very first screen... ??
if yes then pressing R will start recovery console.... and pressing enter will start the setup of XP... if you will continue then it will ask where to install XP.... if you will choose the already installed XP, then it will ask to press R to repair this installation..... this is called the InPlace or Repair Installation which will not delete your data or programs :)

I had to purchase a xp password changer, this didnt completely solve the problem, because I think SP 2 corrupted my password file.  It did allow me to get to the c: prompt and I over wrote the dll file that was giving me the problem.  This then allowed me to get back into my system.  I backed it up, i then installed some additional updates microsoft had and this seemed to take care of the problem.  Thanks for all of the help.
