HardDrive Failed

Hi,

I have a problem with my hard drive. It is a maxtor 40gb. All over sudden the drive is not visible in windows. It is detected by BIOS, but in windows in computer management is visibile as unallocated drive and at some point one of the partition would be visible in windows but it would say "it is not formated, do you want to format now ?".
I dont really know what happened, but i need the data on that drive. Is there any hope for me ??
thanks Pawel

it seems to me that the harddrive somehow lost information about partition.
i am not sure right now ... but i might have mixed partitions on this drive (ntfs and fat32) hopefully this wont matter.
i will check your links as soon as i get home.
thanks Pawel

Does the Disk startup at all (can you hear it spinning up? Download maxtors powermax utility with which you can test the drive. Be carefull not to use the "destructive tests", like the lowlevel format utility. If you get an errormessage you will have to check with maxtor about warranty exchange or other options. If you do get such an error message, you can try to find the exact same disk model and change the pcb. I've been able to recover data from "dead" maxtor drives that way on numerous occations.
