Refresh control on vb.net form

I have a button on a VB.net windows form after click it starts a subroutine that takes some time.  I wish to show the progress of this sub by updating a textbox displaying the number of records processed.  The problem is that I can not find a way of having this textbox refresh to show the latest value during the execution of the sub.  When the sub finishes then the last value is displayed.  I have tryed things like form.refresh, etc.  I remeber in vb6 you had to do something like doevents to allow the form to update itself.  But I can not find anything similar in vb.net

Any help to this irratating problem would be great.
