Windvr 3

Hi,
I have an Xpert TV-PVR 878 pci card in my  computer and i just got windvr 3 to replace the jank software that came with it.  Everything works fine except when i try to record something.  About a half an hour to an hour into the recording the computer restarts.  I tried manualy recording and using the schedual but it does the same thing each time.  I'm running win 2000 and i have all the updates.  Is there a way to fix this or is my card just not compatable?
Thanks,
-Greg

- Please post your system's hardware configuration (processor and RAM and Hard disk capacity.
- Also please post if you are capturing in MPEG-1 or MPEG-2.

ok, i have a p4 2.4 ghz, 512 ram, and a 80 GB hd with 56 GB left.  I'm trying to record in mpeg-2.

-Greg
- I would suggest manually stopping the recording after about 10 minutes or so and playing back the captured file to see if video and audio are in sync.
- It would also be useful to record in mpeg-1 to see if the restart occurs after the same length of time as in mpeg-2 capture.
- The most likely possiblity if your recorded files are okay is an overheating processor (you need to check if the processor's fan is working properly and there is good ventilation around your cabinet. The vents in the cabinet also need to be clean).
- You could check this out by removing the outer case and capturing with the cabinet open for better cooling :-)
- Also we cannot rule out defective RAM yet.
- Please post the results.

Good luck!

ok, the recordings i stop are in sync.  I tried recording in mpeg-1 and it restarted after about 10 min.   I monitored the cpu temperature while recording with mpeg-1  and it jumped to about 48c from its usual 43c.  I don't think its ram because i tried recording (in mpeg-2) last night to my slave HD and it recorded the full hour show with no problems.  I probaly should have mentioned earlier that the hd i can't record to is my master drive but i didn't even of think of trying to record to the slave until last night since i only have about 5 GB left on it.  I have some work i have to do now but i'll open up my computer leter and get the specs on the 2 drives.

ok, my master HD is a segate barracuda 7200 80 GB and the slave is a western digital caviar, i think its 7200 rpm and its also 80 GB.  Not sure if this helps at all.  thanks
- Ok. This seems to be a driver problem since capture to your slave drive works fine wihtout any change in your set-up.
- The generic Windows drivers usually work well for seagate drives, so I can only think of the following...
- Install the latest service pack for the Windows version you are using - if your OS is XP then SP2 - that usually updates the drivers.
- When the system reboots during capture check your Windows log files. Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Event Viewer > Application Log and System Log for the error.
- This sounds dumb, but I guess you defragmented your master drive before beginning video capture :-)

Good luck!

sry, i've been very busy lately and haven't had the time to try recording to check the log.  I have all of the service packs installed, the only thing i haven't installed is some update for outlook but i don't think that would cause this problem  I should be able to try recording today and i'll check the log file.

ok, well i tried recording to my slave drive again and this time it rebooted after about an hour.  I checked the log viewr and there where 3 logs that all happened at the same time.

The first says "event 1001" under event and "save dump" under source.  I opened it and it says "The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x0000001e (0xc0000005, 0xeb728af0, 0x00000000, 0x00000000). Microsoft Windows 2000 [v15.2195]. A dump was saved in: C:\WINNT\Minidump\Mini121804-01.dmp.

The next event is 6009 and says eventlog.  The file says "Microsoft (R) Windows 2000 (R) 5.0 2195 Service Pack 4 Uniprocessor Free. "

the third says  6005  and the file says "The Event log service was started"

Since its restarting with the slave now too i'm guessing that its probaly not the driver. Does this mean its defective RAM?
Hi Greg,
- A 0x0000001 error usually indicates a hardware problem (could be driver related).

Check out this link...

- You could try out the suggested user actions.

- Your problem may not be faulty RAM, especially since you are able to capture for upto an hour.
- We need to eliminate the other possibilities one at a time.

- First off, we need to stop the automatic reboot to see the error info on you screen.
- Right-Click on My Computer > Properties > Advanced > Startup and Recovery.
- Uncheck the 'Automatically Reboot' checkbox.
- Next time the error occurs, note down (and post here!) what your screen displays before manually rebooting.
- It would also be a good idea to try capture with the cabinet open (for better ventilation) to see if that makes any difference (overheating could be a reason for the reboot after an hour) and to make sure you processor's fan is running all the time.

- Also please post your Application Log and Security Log entries (in addition to the System Log entries) for the time when the error occurred.
- The System Log entries you have posted and the dump only indicate that a Windows error has occured so we need to see if any other application is causing the problem.
(Hint: You can type eventvwr.msc in a Run window to view your event logs.)

- It would also be a good idea to check the 'Run' and 'Run once' entries in your registry.
- Type 'regedit' in a Run box (you are editing the registry so be careful :-) and do not make any changes. Simply close the window after viewing the registry)
- Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Run (You may have to click the + button to expand the list in the left pane)
- Post the Names of the entries listed in the right pane.
- Same for the RunOnce key.
- Close the registry editor.
Good luck!

- And please post which OS you are using.
I should have asked this earlier :-)

ok, i have windows 2000.  I unchecked the automatic restart button.  I also moved my tv card to a different pci slot because my graphics card was getting hot and that gave it more room to cool.  After that i tried recording and it went about 3 hours without anything happening.  I'm going to try again tionight and tomorrow.
