Windows XP SP2 - Security - ADSL - System on System off....
The hackers and other such ugly people keep getting more invasive; read tons and a question....
Some feel that with Windows XP SP2 they are adequately protected; then with added 3rd party Viruscan and Firewalls and Spyware tools (all good); problems still exist. With an always on connection, even with a Hardware Firewall, problems exist.
Read recently that it is optimal to keep your system ALWAYS ON .... to ensure that the protections work on live connections (ADSL/DSL).
Looking for expertise on this and comments appreciated.

This questions regards two specific environments, and I am very grateful for your contributions.
One is Windows XP Home XP2 without a router and using McAfee online annual viruscan/firewall protections and no HW firewall and no router.... Security set to medium with TONS of intrusions, we've eradicated but took 2-days. Have AdAware SE PRO and AdWatch/Hackerwatch and Spybot S&D with all current (all apps) and Immunize. This McAfee firewall is set to medium security.
The other is Windows XP Pro also XP2 with Firewall in force, and added McAfee Viruscan (online), Security Center, and Firewall set to tight security with Router Btween two systems with HW firewall, all ports secure and still had some malware intrusions.
All systems always patched with updates.
How can things still intrude?
Baffled and appreciative of your time.
Found VX2, BargainBuddy, n-Case, Windows Ad-Tools, Dyfuca type of internet optimizer, Zeta.exe (which nearly crippled the system), and more....
Gads, what a fiasco.
Insight appreciated.

ActiveX in combination with system restore.
ZoneAlram can protect from 0-day virus's (and spy-ware)with it's process locking. It takes McAfee, Norton, and others 10-24 hours (minmum) to get their DAT's updated and out the day of (aka 0-day) a new virus outbreak. And who can guage when Ad-Aware and Spy-bot (and others) can get their updates out.
McAfee also has an additional setting you may want to turn on "find potentially unwanted.joke programs" http://vil.nai.com/images/VSE7-ODS-PROGRAM.gif
Remember on XP, in order to remove any virus, or spyware completely- you must disable system restore first, then remove, otherwise M$ will put it back on your PC http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
All of the programs you listed are due to using IE and activeX controls. Try using a new browser- FireFox forexample, the tabbed browsing alone is reason enough to switch.
