st5unst.000 error after startup on XP
After my Pc boots into the desktop I get a blue screen with a box entitled Application Removal. In this box is a message saying could not open logfile C:\windows\st5unst.000 and also another message, a serious setup error has occured, removing current installation files, and an uninstallation box with 0% on it. If I click ok, it dissapears and I can continue working as normal.
we also need to know if you had installed something the time
before this error occured at startup... try to remember...
otherwise you can also use a previous restore point, but choose
some recent one (not to mess everything up. you might lose data)
Happy new year (^____^)

From what I can gather I had tried to install a program ( one I had used in W98SE)which uses VBrun V5. I had a file in my windows XP directory called st6unst.000 so I made a copy of this and renamed it st5unst.000. The message that came up then was do I wish to delete it to help with diagnostics. I said yes but when I restarted the message was still there. I also could not find any program in Add Remove programs which could have caused this problem nor any st5unst.000 to uninstall!

have you yet removed the renamed st5unst.000 file from the windows folder, and then put back the backedup copy of st6unst.000 back there ??

No. I was also prompted to remove a program for Ms train simulator called Shape File Viewer. When I did this the original file called st6unst.000 was removed also.
ok tell the results from safemode booting then ??

To do that I will need to get off the web and report back later, ok.
ok :)
if this is really annoying one solution is to restore the system
most of the software make restore points before installation
check out to see if there's one before installation.

Ok, after booting into safe mode this message does not appear
good.... so try this now from normal mode :)
Goto Start>Run>msconfig>Startup , and click on Disable All
now goto Services section, and tick Hide Microsoft Services
and now untick all those third party services
restart and now check if the same problem ??
if NO then u can re-enable each application\service at a time to trace out the culprit one !!

Sheharyaar, I did what you asked, BUT! I forgot to untick all those third party services. When I restarted the message did not come up.
if you dont find the service in msconfig tab, then go directly to these using regedit.
save the keys first then trace out the culprit
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\Run
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunOn ce
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR E\Microsof t\Windows\ CurrentVer sion\RunOn ceEx
wow (o____o) it's been some time i haven't done some tidy up myself...

that means the problematic program lies in the Startup list
now leave the services..... and start enabling the programs one by one to trace out the culprit one! :)

if the list is too long then you can perhaps post here the list (export key, open with notepad then copy'n'paste)
we might be able to point the culprit quickly.

As I said, I forgot to untick tham all and they are still all enabled
tabitha...... you said you didn't untick Services...... ok no problem :)
you disabled Startup list..... and the error went away......!
that means the program which is causing this error lies in the Startup list..... you can leave the Services ticked now...... and now try to enable the Startup programs one by one to check that which particular program is casuing the error! :)
confused?? :)

Ok, I opened a program that I have called Startup Faster 2004, and it displays in a ticked box st5uninstaller.Lnk current user startup folder and its command line C:\....\st5uninstaller.Lnk
If I untick this box will that be all that is necessary to remove this program?

yes untick it...... and system will not start this program on next startup :)
but it will not "uninstall" the program...... it will just disable it from starting at windows startup!

right, Then how will I need to uninstall it?
ASKER
and should I reenable all ms services?
