No signal from AGP card

Hi,

Just purchased an ATI Radeon 9200se to replace my onboard graphics card. I put in the new card, plugged the monitor cable in but when i turn the computer on i get no signal from my new card. By using my onboard graphics i have changed the default graphics adapter in the BIOS from PCI to AGP/Onboard. I have tried disabling the old drivers and installing the software for my new card but this makes no difference either. Also worth noting is that when I start up the PC with the new card in but still with the monitor connected to the onboard graphics, my PC does not even notice that new hardware has been installed. Is it possible that there is something wrong with my AGP slot? The PC I am using is a Compaq Presario.

The first thing to check is if the new card you bought is compatable - what model Presario do you have?  You can verify what kind of AGP slot you have by running Everest http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3

You also need to check if that card actually works, usually by trying it in another machine.  Normally, you should at least see the POST messages as the system boots up.  If you don't see this, either the card doesn't work, the card is not compatable with your motherboard, or there's a BIOS settingthat needs to be changed (something like primary display is AGP).

Need Compaq model number. Seems that you must disable on-board adapter in bios.

According to the back of my PC it is a Compaq Presario S0000. As for the BIOS, the only options available are PCI or AGP/Onboard.

Oh and have tried it in a housemates machine and it works fine.

That's a little too generic - can you download and run Everest and post what it says your motherboard is?  http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en&pageid=3
Make sure the card is pushed in all the way into the AGP slot.  Normally (with clones anyways) once you install a AGP card, the on-board gets automatically disabled. (Unless it's not an AGP card, but a PCI, then it gets more tricky)
