· MDAC 2.7 bundled with the 2003 VisualStudio.net install CD.
· MDAC271Refresh from the Microsoft website
· MDAC 2.8 from Microsoft.
I'm uopgrading my VisualStudio.net installation to 2003 (from 2002) on my laptop. I have previously upgraded this on my desktop with no problems. I am getting an error that causes a rollback of the install and a suggestion that I call my Software Vendor.
I've looked at a number of suggestions in other parts of this forum and so far not solved the problem......
I've tried the following:
· Removed all MDAC dependent applications from run list.
· Stopped Norton Anti-virus
· Run Task Manager and removed anything that looks remotely like an MDAC dependency.
· Ran LISTDLLs.exe from SysInternals.com to identify whether any MDAC dependencies were running – couldn't see any.
· Deleted ExceptionComponents key in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWAR
· Manually extracted Mdac_typ.exe.: C:\mdac_typ.exe /c /t:c:\MDACSetup
· Used logging. C:\MDACSetup\Setup.exe /gc C:\Mdaclog.txt
(Alternative to the two steps above: C:\Mdac_typ.exe /C:"Setup /GC C:\Mdaclog.txt")
· No log file found…..
I can't proceed with my 2003 install without this so I'm stymied…. Help!!

Do one of the following:
If Windows is running:
Close all open programs.
Click Restart, and then click OK.
If Windows is not running:
If the computer is on, turn off the power.
Turn on the computer.
Watch the screen while it is still black. When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is the first item in the list and is selected by default. (If it is not selected, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to select it.)
Press Enter. The computer will start in Safe mode. This can take a few minutes.
When you are finished with troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would.
Misunderstood the context of the 'Safe Mode'.
I have now started the OS in Safe ode. Run the Setup /gc c:\mdaclog.txt and, sadly, got the same negative results. Still no log.

As my problem title suggests, I have carried out these procedures with MDAC 2.7, MDAC 2.71Refresh and with MDAC 2.8, all with the same negative results. After the helpful comment from MKLine71, I repeated these operations, for each MDAC version, in Safe Mode.
Still no joy

Thanks for that... very useful in that I could review the dasetup.log file generated by the process - as mentioned in the Microsoft link...
However, (the bad news)...
I renamed the odbcconfig.dll file as suggested, ran the unmigrt.cmd as suggested.... still no joy...
Tried this on both 28 and 27, deleting the exceptioncomponents key in the registry each time.
The dasetup.log file reports the following:
Stae after Install:
Setup was successful: 0
Setup Requires reboot: 0
Setup requires reboot: 1
Error: The following error was encounterd during setup:
*** (null):
Unspecified error
(Severity 100, Type 2, code 0x80004005)
Just as a sanity check, I went back to the original 2003 .net install and tried again and ... it still didn't work.
losing the will to live :)

So... many happy (?) hours re-installing gigabytes of data and programs on my new laptop. (sob)

Windows 2000 is an operating system for use on both client and server computers. It is the successor to Windows NT 4.0, and is the last version of Microsoft Windows to display the "Windows NT" designation. Four editions of Windows 2000 were released (Professional, Server, Advanced Server, and Datacenter Server) that shared a core set of features, including many system utilities such as the Microsoft Management Console. All versions of the operating system support NTFS 3.0, Encrypting File System, as well as basic and dynamic disk storage. The Windows 2000 Server family includes support for Active Directory services, Distributed File System and fault-redundant storage volumes.
