Failed to transfer the schema FSMO role: 52 When I run adprep /forestprep
I'm simply trying to add a 2003 server to a 2000 server domain. Let me give you a bit of history here:
The small network had two 2000 servers, both DCs.
Server-1 had all roles but the schema master role.
Server-2 had the Schema Master role.
Server-2 then got a virus and did not recover so I seized the schema master role thru ntdsutil.exe. As far as I can tell when I check in the schema master snap-in, server-1 is listed as the schema master and I have the edit this schema on this server box checked.
Now I'm trying to add the server-3 (a 2003 server) to the domain by running adprep on the the 2000 server which is the schema master.
When I run it, I get the error:
Opened Connection to Server-1
SSPI Bind succeeded
Current Schema Version is 13
Upgrading schema to version 30
ERROR: Failed to transfer the schema FSMO role: 52 (Unavailable).
I've checked other postings on this topic and all they say to do is transfer the role to another DC. I have no other DC to transfer it to. HELP!!!
Thanks!

I'm not familiar with the DCDiag and Netdiag. I tried running them but I couldn't find the commands. I think it had something to do with the dead dc still in AD. I tried removing it from DC computers in users and computers but it said you can't delete DSA object.

I went to the microsoft site above and did what they said to remove the old DC which was successful however the adprep /forestprep was not. Here's the log.
Opened Connection to Server-1
SSPI Bind succeeded
Current Schema Version is 13
Upgrading schema to version 30
Connecting to "Server-1"
Logging in as current user using SSPI
Importing directory from file "C:\WINNT\system32\sch14.l df"
Loading entries.
The server side error is "A database error has occurred."
0 entries modified successfully.
An error has occurred in the program
ERROR: Import from file C:\WINNT\system32\sch14.ld f failed. Error file is saved
in ldif.err.14.
What now do you think?

Wait I figured it out. You have to also go into DNS and delete all the records pertaining to the old DC in the entire tree. THANKS ODBA
Also, after installing that server, you may want to run the standard DCDiag and Netdiag, to check for any errors. Also, make sure replication is up-to-date before trying to install the 2003 server.
