Mmh, I read on Adobe's webpages that for some languages one will have to install LANGUAGE packages; so UNICODE might not be the standard codepage.<br />
The password has been entered in a 'normal' form field and normally submitted.<br />
The PC has japanese fonts installed, so that might be the root of the problem. But then there should be a way to set the codepage explicitly?!

For any string you enter, you need a font that &nbsp;supports all the characters in your string. You can select the font by opening the properies dialog for your text field, select the &quot;Appearance&quot; tab and select the font.

I just run a test with a simple form: I have two form fields and one button, the button copies the content of the first field to the second field. When I enter a string with a '§' character, it gets copied without any problems. <br />

I submit the password to a java servlet and print the content. password then contains \247 (instead of the &amp;&nbsp;or §, can't remember...).<br />
So my guess was that Adobe encrypts for HTTP stream, but what codepage? Ideally for the future is UNICODE. But where to define?

OK, so you only see this problem when you go outside of Acrobat. How to you call the Java servlet? Do you create a URL that you submit? Are you using SOAP? Can you provide a short code snippet that shows how you do this?

PDFDocEncoding is not Unicode. When you don't specify a value, it's either Unicode or PDDocEncoding. As I said, the JavaScript reference says that Acrobat selects the best encoding depending on the characters used. <br />

Why do you think that Acrobat's JavaScript is not a good programming environment? Since Adobe introduced the debugger in Acrobat 6 it's actually pretty easy to use.
