Use my 2k3 web server to share files over the web

Hi,
I want to extend the use of my server to be able to use it to share files, like office docs etc. I've set up WevDAV, but this is very very slow - unusable for this purpose, I would say. Is there another way? (FTP is fast enough, but isn't it unsecure? Windows warns that the password is being sent in clear text. Also, I can't open and save Office docs easily using ftp.)
Thanks,
Peter.

The mut's nuts, eh? Is it secure? And will it let me open and maniplulate an Access database on my home computer that is stored on the server?
