I have a machine running Windows 98. When I boot up it wont boot except in Safe Mode. I turn it on and I get the black startup screen that says all the options to boot from - like if I tapped the F8. If I try the "Normal" mode - it just loops me back to the same screen and highlights the Safe Mode.
I did install a new CD Rom drive before this and it was after I installed the Nero Software and rebooted in order to finish the install that it started. Don't know for sure if the two are related. When it boots it shows that it finds all the drives but because it doesn't load the CD Drivers in Safe Mode I don't know if it will find them or not.
Please Help.... I had a somewhat similar experience once and it was the Hard Drive Died. This is an old machine - I think at least 4 years old... could the Hard Drive be going?

Can you boot in safe mode and perform a checkdisk?

i would disconnect the cd drive first, then try again; if this does not help, uninstall the Nero software.
Also while in safe mode, check in device manager for exclamation marks ( before disconnecting anything)
Check also if the Nero version is suited for your system and OS

I would start by uninstalling Nero in Safe Mode and reboot.
