Windows 2000 Server PPTP VPN

I have just setup a PPTP VPN to connect to our server I can connect no problem however if I try to access the server via \\servername\folder  I get an “error server cannot be contacted.” If I try using the ip address I can get in \\100.100.100.100\folder but the connection is very slow.

Any help will be greatly appreciated

Thanks
