Spelling and Grammar Check not working in MS Word 2000
When attempting to spell check the document, I receive the following error:
Word cannot open the spelling file C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Proof\MSSP3EN.LEX for English
After selecting OK, the document simply says that the spell check is complete without actually correcting anything.
About a week ago I attempted to apply settings for a spell check in Dutch so I believe I might have uninstalled or changed something that cases this error.
Thanks for you help.

It's checked. However I'm working in Word 2000 and have version 9.0.6926 SP3, with the Windows 2000 operating system.
I installed PROOFKIT.MSI to make use of Dutch Spell check and grammar 2 weeks ago. I also have problems with Spelling in MS Outlook don't know if this helps with the problem solving.

The spelling and grammar checking may have been disabled in Word. To enable them, choose Tools/Options/Spelling & Grammar. Check the boxes marked 'Check spelling as you type' and 'Check grammar as you type'.
If English (default) and Dutch are supported, you should be able to combine multiple languages in one document and still use the spelling checker.
Select some text and use Tools/Language/Set Language to tell Word what language it should use for the spelling checker and hyphenation.

Did all that too but the problem persists.
Hi wilcor14,
Try the following:
1) CTRL + A to select all your text
2) Open the Tools...Language...Set Language menu item. Make sure the "Do not check spelling or grammar" checkbox isn't checked.
3) Open the Tools...Options...Spelling and Grammar menu item, and hit the "Recheck Document" button.
Cheers!

Make sure English(US) is selected and Detect Language automatically is checked. (In Word 2002 SP3)
