Printers disappear, reinstall, get "RPC server is unavailable" message.

Have a problem which I've seen posted previously, but without a resolution that works.  Printers disappear, reinstall, get "RPC server is unavailable" after drivers seem to complete loading.  RPC, RPC locator and Print Spooler are set for automatic startup whe viewed under Services in Admin Tools (XP).  RPC & RPC locator show to be started status in MSCONFIG services,  but Print spooler shows to be stopped and unsure how to start (or if I need to).  This all with a Brother 1440 laser printer over a USB cable.  System has been antivirused, spywared and adwared--all offending files deleted, but problem still remains

My first post and sole reason to enroll, please help.
Thanks so much-Gale

Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Mr. Tupa-THANK YOU!

I have six hours invested in this repair, your information repaired it in six minutes.

GIVE HIM THE POINTS!

My only regret is that you made it look so easy, I feel very humbled.  Care to guess at a cause?  Virus, malware, stupid luck?

Thanks again, Gale

The most likely problem was a defective or incompatible printer driver.  The steps I posted above are excellent usually fix such problems so I'm very glad I could help.

To accept the answer I gave you I believe you'll see an 'accept' button at the bottom of this posting. And then a place to award the points.

Happy computing,
