Why i can't write static ip address in Win98 network properties ? i don't wont APIPA self-configuration!

sorry for my english.
I have to insert STATIC IP ,SUBNET and GATEWAY on my win98 pc.
If i try, i can't write any number in tcp/ip proprties, in dns and in gateway box!
Cursor simply there isn't!
Using winipcfg command, APIPA has assigned a self-ip (169....).
By disabling APIPA, no solution.
1-How can i be able to write IpNumber  by myself?
2-If 1 is "impossible", how can i configure APIPA to set my Nic with 192.168.100.20, sm 255.255.255.0, gw 192.168.100.1 etc..etc..
managing registry?
Please help me!

I know!
I can't write!! By clicking with mouse, no cursor is available!
Did u ever seen about this problem? possible virus?
Or a fault in network configuration?
(I  just tried  with a new NIc , it's the same on both adapter).
Ask me details, i know so it's hard to understand...
check this may help u :
How to Troubleshoot Basic TCP/IP Problems :
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;169790
thanks, i've already tried some topics, i'll control the other.
but it'something of strange.
what does prevent me to insert a simple static ip? what kind of configuration?
look in the registry for
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans
there will be a few folders
look for tcp/ip in one of them
and then see if you can change it there (backup the reg key before editing it!!!!!!)
my boss closed , now I'm at home...i'll try tomorrow.
However i looking for another info about that key.....

YOur question is about 98 right? about one machine, yes?
one machine with win98, in a small lan without domain, without dhcp.
only gateway and two extern dns.
other machine (win2000,winXp, and another98) are ok.
Did you make the manual entries in the registry?
In the registry i added only this key:
Under HKLM/...CurrentOntrolSet/Services/Vxd/Dhcp/dhco0001
IpAutoConfigurationEnabled set at 0, to disable APIPA.

I don't think someone before me used the regedit command....
Doing so, in fact my NIC does receive no ip by APIPA....
But neither by me...
I meant add the static ip

this is one from one of our 98 boxes

When i'll try, i tell u.
Meanwhile thanks a lot..
Ok, it works..
My pc is seen by other machines, also gateway is ok.
What kind of keys I have to modify for Dns settings,
is there (surely) a way to add Dns (two) severs?
Thanks Great  steven!
Sorry , i can't try your suggestions at once, my 98 is at work..

Hello !
I try what above, this strange effect  happens...
I reboot machine, using "winipcfg" now i read Dns settings too.
Then i try to launch internet explorer, but receive "dns error".
Try to ping gateway = ok, other machine = ok, dns = NO.
So internet doesn't go.
again with "winipcfg" and WHAT?
Before, at startup:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0005]
"DriverDesc"="TCP/IP"
"InfSection"="MSTCP.ndi"
"IPAddress"="192.168.100.11"
"IPMask"="255.255.255.0"
"DeviceVxDs"="vtdi.386,vip.386,vtcp.386,vdhcp.386,vnbt.386"
"InstallVnbt"="0"
"InfPath"="NETTRANS.INF"
"ProviderName"="Microsoft"
"DriverDate"=" 4-23-1999"
"DevLoader"="*ndis"
"DefaultGateway"="192.168.100.5"
"NodeType"="1"

After:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0005]
"DriverDesc"="TCP/IP"
"InfSection"="MSTCP.ndi"
"IPAddress"="1.1.2.1"  (<--- OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS)
"IPMask"="1.2.1.1" (<--- OR SOMETHING LIKE THIS)
"DeviceVxDs"="vtdi.386,vip.386,vtcp.386,vdhcp.386,vnbt.386"
"InstallVnbt"="0"
"InfPath"="NETTRANS.INF"
"ProviderName"="Microsoft"
"DriverDate"=" 4-23-1999"
"DevLoader"="*ndis"
"DefaultGateway"="192.168.1.250"
"NodeType"="1"

And my 98 in this condition is out from network...
Why? Why dns settings changes ip settings?
Should be ....any keys wrong?
Sorry for my english..
