Windows 98 First Edition - Reboot goes to black screen.

Hello,

I have a windows 98 first edition computer. I am having an issue where if I try to restart the system the screen goes black and then the monitor goes into standby but the power light is on on the keyboard and on the tower. The fans continue to run but it does not reboot. When I shutdown the system it shuts down fine. When I select to put the system in standby it goes in and out of standby just fine.

I tried disabling the secondary Ide controller master and slave in the BIOS. This did nothing I was thinking this problem may be related to the cd-rom drives locking up. Apparently it is not. I also tried disabling PCI Steering and I downloaded the shutdown patch which seemed to help some because now at least I get a windows is shutting down screen but yet it still will not reboot it just sits there.

Any ideas ?

this is on and AMD Gateway 750 model machine    192mb ram and it is an AMD processor with the SECC II packaging to it.

Also if I power it down by holding in the button and then immediately repower it back up it still sits there if I wait a minute after powering it down then try to boot it up it clicks and boots up. Otherwise the fans just spin and the light on the tower remains in standby mode.
Problem fixed:

No one will ever believe this but it was a BAD mouse.

every once and awhile when I had to shut it down by the power switch and bring it back up it came up with an error message saying it could not find a ps2 mouse. Apparently the mouse was hanging the system I have successfully rebooted it 5 times since removing it and everything is fine.

Been there and done that, Brian, LOL.  Since you posted the question and no other Experts were involved, the points should be returned without problems.  The reason you couldn't delete it directly is because comments were added, even though they were your very own.  ":0) Asta
