SMTP + Settings

I am having problems with the smtp server, for some reason emails will not go to our internal company domain, but they go to outside domains.  I really do not know much about SMTP Server, is there certain settings, or is there somewhere i can run some tests to get the error messages?  Are there certain settings i can change to try different things.
