Linksys WRT54G, anyone try different firmware-Alchemy, Sveasoft, linksysinfo.org?
Have above router on Win2k box.
I do not intend to use the router as a VPN. I will have a Range Extender that I ordered that I could return.
I will be adding 2 7dbi antennas but not sure if they have any vaule.
*****Wonder if this can be upgraded through software/firmware to a WRT54GS model?
*****Does the ALchemy,Talisman,Sveasoft firmware offer any advantages to a simple home user to perhaps provide a better or stringer signal?
****Some people have written that boosting the power seemed to show no difference. Opinions?
*****Just tinkering and learning. What are the best settings and firmware?
*****If it all gets flubbed up, can I recover the original firmware if I cannot get into the box via IP address??
Thank you on this newbie topic for me.

Thanks. Would like more info from people using the new third party firmware. I would have gone with a Pre-N but they do not make a desktop or USB card nyet-Seems like no MIMO manufactuerers do at this time. Am holding out. Also some of my clients use Linksys.

It has a much higer distance and strengh. The Linksys 802.11g just didn't have enough range in our large 2-1/2 story home. After going with the Belking 802.11 pre n, I now get full strentgh anywhere I go in or out doors.
The firmware upgrade didn't help me on the Linksys I had. I think you should try a firmware upgrade first, and the atennea's before making another investment. Another idea is to re-loacte the router if possible, to a more central area or near open areas.
I have also noticed with your router, there are 5 different Verisons if you want to download firmware:
For the WRT54G there are:
v 1.0
v 1.1
v 2
v 2.2
v 3
