asked on

dvd drive and burner both not working. not appearing in my computer, but in the bios.

hey.

my cd/dvd drives have stopped working. i have a dvd/cd reader and a dvd/cd writer. my computer is a packard bell running windows xp home. (this problem has been with me for a while but havent had the chance to try and fix it, so i cant use system restore as there are no restore points past a couple of days ago)

these drives suddenly stopped appearing in my computer (i dont know what i was doing beforehand as i dont know exactly when this was... i became aware of it when trying to burn a cd in nero and the drive wasn't there)

in device manager all the drives listed, there are 5, have the little yellow circle by them... drives listed are:

CD-ROM Drive
CD-ROM Drive
CD-ROM Drive
HL-DT--ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B
PIONEER DVD-RW DVR-105

the message it gives is this:

Windows successfully loaded the device driver for this hardware but cannot find the hardware device. (Code 41)

can anyone help me at all?!! i REALLY need my cd burner now for work and have NO idea what to do.

any more info i need to give, please just ask. not too techie on computers so not entirely sure what info you'll need.

many thankyous in advance

ooh yeah, one more thing that might be useful.

the drive works fine, in the sense that it opens, shuts, etc all normally.

thanks for the tip... since posting the problem i uninstalled the drives and rebooted. they are now showing a code 19 error about a registry problem.

(as an extra point, i've been trying to determine what i was doing when they may have stopped working and it appears to be at a similar time that i uninstalled alcohol from my computer. seems to be a bit of a coincidence...)

following your advice callandor, that appears to heading in the right direction, i have opened the registry editor.

all i get is 'property handler' and in the right side of the screen 'default' REG_SZ (value not set)

could anyone please advise as to how to set about following the advice in the link callandor has provided from where i am.

sorry, but having never been here before i'm wary of breaking anything!!!

thanks loads
