Applet to Excel

Is it true that an SIGNED applet running within a browser can open files and read/write to them on the local machine? Do you know of a demo where I can see an applet e.g. opening and Excel file and sending data to it?

Yes

You need the POI api to write to Excel. There are examples on this site and in the download:

Thanks

CEHJ - We currently already have POI running within the Webstart environment. The question is specifically seeking an example of it running in a signed applet within a browser. Do you know of any such examples?

object - these links seem to have expired.

they work fine from here. Perhaps the server was down when you tried.

Thoses links contain examples of using both POI and JDBC to access Excel files.
