JSP to Excel, Content-Type: Application/vnd.ms-excel won't work with Excel2003

Hello Experts,

We have an JSP page that export the data to Excel by setting the response (ie Content-Type: Application/vnd.ms-excel). It works fine with Excel 97, but when we upgrade to Excel2003, the document is downloaded and opened fine. However when I want to save as, it thinks it is a HTML document and tries to save it as an web page document. I understand that from there I can change the file type to .xls and it will work fine. This extra step is very annoying and I am wondering if Excel still think it is a HTML document since it is downloaded from an jsp. We want to be able to save the document as an true excel document.

Try using Apache's POI  project that gives an API to create and read excel files. you could put the logic in your .jsp file, use a servlet or or bean

its stable and works well. Its pretty much like:

//create file

worksheet worksheet  = new workbook()
sheet sheet = workbook.createSheet()
row row = sheet.createRow();
cell cell = cell.createCell();

for example, encapsulated very nice really easy to use

here is the api documentation as well:
