Will redirect pages affect search engines' listing & ranking?

Need experts' advice:

I have a site built first for local (Chinese) and using a sub-domain for English.
Due to the decision to develop internationally, I am checking the way to reconstruct my site so that the English language pages would be in the major domain for better development.

The problem is, there are many links to the web pages for the English sub-domain. It is not possible to delete all these web pages. If I use redirect method, will this affect the search engines' listing and ranking? Is there a better way to proceed?

Search engines consider subdomains to be independent websites even though they may share the same IP address and root domain.

If you use a 301 redirect everything should be ok as long as you keep the old pages until they have vanished from the index.  You will still need to contact the owners of the important inbound links and ask them to change to the new domain.

When you say "for better development" what exactly do you mean? The search engines will treat the sub-domain as a separate entity what do you want to achieve by changing it?

Thanks, duz.

1. I am not sure whether Google etc. would change according to any advice. But, of course, I shall not cancel the old pages until the new pages have been indexed. Or I may keep the old files for a longer time.

2. The sub-domain is not a registered domain, it is just a link offered by the hosting. I suppose that would not be favorable for search engines. If search engines do not have folder to update the indexing, then the sub-domain cannot enjoy any improvement in ranking. Am I right or not?

Oh, duz, that means I got the wrong idea that it was not the sub-domain that should be worked on for better ranking.
The problem is that I might have use the wrong way to check my situation with Google.
Do you have any suggestion about using the Google API key to check?

Type in your subdomain (subdomain.domain.com) here and your keyword/phrase http://www.googlerankings.com/
