I am running Apache 1.3.31 with php on Win2k3. Apache recognises index.html files but not index.php. In httpd.config I have added:

   AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
   AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps

before:
</IfModule>
# End of aliases.

and :
    AddType application/x-httpd-php .php

after:
    AddType application/x-tar .tgz

Any ideas please?

Is PHP loaded as a module like

LoadFile "C:/Prog/Apache Group/apache/bin/php4ts.dll"
LoadModule php4_module "C:/Prog/Apache Group/apache/bin/php4apache2.dll"

in your httpd.conf?

if you ment the DirectoryIndex, search in your httpd.conf for DirectoryIndex and add index.php like

DirectotyIndex index.html index.php default.html

Yes, php4_module is loaded and php works fine. It was the DirectoryIndex I was looking for, thanks very much.
