User Canonical name

Hello,
I have a single AD domain on Windows 2003.
I had previously created a user account. The user's name I was originally given was Todd Smith. Now have been told that there is only 1 'd' in Todd, so need to change it to 'Tod Smith'

Where do I need to go to change that (if possible)... I thought the user's displayed name was using the general description information when creating a new id (i.e. first name, middle , last name, etc..)
I've made the changes there but it hasn't made any difference. I noticed on the userid properties on the 'OBJECT' tab, the 'Canonical name of object' still reflects 'Todd Smith'
I understand the domain sid's and how each object is generated a unique id...yadda, yadda, yadda....so not sure if this is something i can even change once created, or would it require blowing away that id and creating a new one.....

No ned to recreate a new one; in ADUC, right-click the "Todd Smith" account, and choose "rename".
