INstalling ATI X800 Drivers on SuSe 9.2 Pro

Hi
Can anyone plz help to install the ATI drivers for X800 pci-e on SuSe9.2?

DL'ed the drivers from ati.com, and installed via rpm, but X fails to start. It looks like it is not recognising the card and then complains about not being able to run in framebuffer mode. I also cannot find the file SuSe uses to configure X??? /etc/X11/xorg.conf is blank?

Thx

You still have to config the XF86config file  in order to use the new drivers. SuSE 9.2 DOES have xorg, but they still use the old file names for compatibility with driver manufacturers. You may also need to re-compile your kernel if you have done an upgrade though YasT since install of the RPM. Edit the option in the XF86Config file very carefully as follows:

1) Drop to runlevel3 (init3)
2) run the fglrxconfig script and follow it's instructions.
3) Be VERY careful about the screen sizing and refresh mode settings as otherwise you will end up with a black sceen!!
4) At the end of the script it should have created a new XF86Config file witha .4 extention.
5) Issue an "init 5" to take you back to the logging screen.

If for any reason this last step fails you should check out the step above again..paying attention to the mode settings.

Best of luck

Hi prof666

The problem is that during the running of the fglrxconfig, the x800 is not listed as one of the cards you can select, also it seems not to detect the card at all. Any ideas?
Are you running 32bit or x86_64???
32 bit
These are the official Suse instructions- try following them and see if that makes a difference. I know the x800 has worked in Linux with some people, but I know there has been some trouble with it. Let me know how it works out.
