Hi everyone

I had heard about sametime but never used before , Noticed that from  6.5.1 its built-in service , just need to START.

currently i m using 6.5.2 domino

my questions:

1- Just start the service on server and configure notes client for sametime ???????? Or any thing else need to be done
2- Would it effect server performance or anyone has some strange/bad expereince???

No, you need a separate server to run sametime on.  You can use sametime for free now from within Lotus Notes, but you still need a separate server.  (Actually, it is probably possible to run sametime on your main server, but I wouldn't advice you to do that).

oh No :(

more apprehensive now , but many thanks Tom for giving valuable info.

qwaletee , kumar hey guys any experience or comments ???? i thought IBM has included this sametime service in 6.5.1 to make life easy :)

i have 100 email users who will use this instant messaging.

so now Tom what u think i must get another machine not necessary hifi server and install domino server software on it under same domain and org and run sametime service on it ?

Yep, that's it.

Using VMWARE or something similar, you could run the 2 domino servers on 1 box - but it depends on your hardware.  A powerful desktop machine will do just fine too ...

but for the testing purpose only , i belief no harm to start service on existing server and try on 2-3 users ?????

how many users u think can degrade the performance of server , u have ur own experience?

I wouldn't do it - and I don't think it will work like that, out of the box.  You have to install Sametime separately from the Domino server - and it will overwrite some configurations (eg. the login form for http).
For testing, you can install it on your own pc, for instance.

ok Tom

i tried to install domino on my test server .

first i configured inotes web direct to make sure the http access for few dummy users . It was fine ,

my http login ---http://test2k/webmail.nsf?open was OK. all users managed to go in by providing internet password.

later i installed sametime and then test chatting on few machines , it was OK

BUt, i lost my web login for mail

NOW, http://test2k/webmail.nsf?open    is showing sametime login  :(

and now none of them can go in even used the same login id and internet password :(

just wondering how to restore , unless uninstall sametime ,

Sorry to add 1 more thing

i checked Domino Web Server Configuration (Domcfg.nsf ) and realized that Form Mapping was changed to

Target Database : STconfig.snf
Target Form :      STLogonForm

i changed back to

webmail.nsf
LoginForm

I managed to see my http login screen , but users still cannot go in

That's 1 of the reasons you shouldn't install Sametime on an existing server.

The Sametime login form is a bit different from the standard, but you should be able to log in and use your mail.  Also, there may have been changes in the HTTP/Internet configuration that cause login to fail.  I would advise you to use the FQDN for  the server instead of just the hostname : so http://test2K.yourdomain.com instead of http://test2K
This will make session based authentication work, and will probably solve your login problem

BTW, the default login form is NOT in webmail.nsf, but in domcfg.nsf !

Tom

yes u were right i  tried to use FQDN and it works

using sametime on another server causing another domino server license to me , so i thought to test on same server to see what problems i might face.

it seems that it cause some login settings problems which can be adjust later once sametime installed
