MSDE Installation Error

I am having difficulty getting an instance of MSDE installed.  I have included the problem area from the error log.

Action start 9:19:00: RestoreSetupParams.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B.
MSI (s) (54:34): Creating MSIHANDLE (59) of type 790542 for thread 1588
SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server Setup.{E09B48B5-E141-427A-AB0C-D3605127224A}
Entering Function MyMsiEvaluateCondition
MsiEvaluateCondition for SQLMSDEInstalled returned TRUE
End Function MyMsiEvaluateCondition
Error reading setup parameters
Action ended 9:19:01: RestoreSetupParams.2D02443E_7002_4C0B_ABC9_EAB2C064397B. Return value 3.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so what is the solution?

Do you have an SQL Server or a previous MSDE instance already installed?

ASKER

The instance was previously installed.  I ran the uninstall through add/remove programs and was able to uninstall the instance.  When trying to reinstall I get this error.

I used the tool msicuu.exe which is a GUI version of msizap.exe that is mentioned in the above URL.  I will attempt to remove the directory and registry keys and see if that fixes the issue.  Thanks for the help.
Somtimes MSDE will not install if the system databases from a previous installation have not been deleted.
Try deleting the previous installation folder and run through the install again.
I am interested in the final disposition just to make sure for my own sake that the issue was related to un-install of MSDE
I have an objection to this disposition. MSDE un-install via Add/Remove programs has numerous issues which is what Clingerman encountered. The URL I provided offered options to properly clean up previous MSDE installations and in my not so humble opinion, should have resolved the issue. If the issue is unresolved after proposing a solution, askers usually come back and tell you that it did not work...
