3COM U.S robotics 56K pro message modem

Hi, I bought an external 56k modem to work with linux recently for $16AU. It's as described in the question title and the model number is: 04562501. Before i bought this i used a lucent winmodem.

My winmodem mostly always connected above 49.2Kbps. Usually connected at 52Kbps on average, but this external modem seems to connect at 45.2Kbps. You might argue that the connection speeds may be misleading to the performance of the modem, however i notice with the external modem downloads go slower, and web pages take longer to load.

If winmodems are so bad, why do they connect faster, and download quicker?

Is there any way i can make my external modem connect a bit quicker?

I bought the external modem so i could get it easily working with linux, but the internal 56k downloads at around 5KB/s average, while the external one seems to download at 4.2KB/s on average. I'm not very happy.

i tried it in linux and it's the same problem as in windows, so maybe the operating system settings can be ruled out.
