What is the significance of "time slots" in T1s?  Do you only utilize timeslots when you want to seaprate a T1 over many of your sites???  This is the vague explanation my CCNA book gave.

Are time slots commonly used with T1s?  Is it the same thing as a fractional T1?

Thanks for any explanation

Every T1 has 24 x 64k timeslots (or channels). Remember that T1's were originally designed to carry voice on each channel.
You can order "fractional" T1's that only use some of the timeslots. For example, a 256k fractional T1 only uses 4 timeslots. If you have a Cisco WIC 1DSU T1, your interface command would look like:
  interface serial 0/0
   service-module t1 timeslots 1-4

That is, assuming that the telco did assign the circuit to timeslots 1-4. It could just as easily be 21-24. This gives you the opportunity to split out voice and data with a "drop and insert" DSU that lets you use timeslots 1-4 for data and the rest for long distance voice or something....
In an external DSU, you have to map the channels to the port, depending on the make/model of DSU.
Typically, a fractional T1 is less expensive than a "full" T1 that uses all 24 channels.
