perl on windows (2k xp)

Installing active perl on portable usb flash drive.
Assume all I need to do is update the path
to "DRIVE:\perl\bin" on any new box I visit.

Notice that registry has a bunch of entries.
Do I have to mess with that?  Damn registry!

there are afew setting, on my box you can see them with regedit at
You may be able to get by without setting these and just updatring the PATH variable. Give it a go and see what happens.

If you use the installer package it will do all the registry and path setting for you anyhow. Is the problem when you want to move the USB to another computer?

Workarounds could be to compile your perl app to an execuatble wiht ActiveStates PerlApp.
A bit way out, but perhaps you could install Linux and Perl onto your USB and use it as a boot device. (From my reading, you can't install windows onto a USB)

Seems to work just fine.  I just would like to know
if this is an illusion :-).  Sure enough it will fail
when I'm on the road.

Aside.  You can install Linux on a usb flash drive?  Does it reconfigure
itself for new hardware then at each boot?  Most boxes
aren't that different these days but the video, drive, nic and
sound can be unique and require 'special' stuff.  Interesting.

(would it even use the hard drive?)

Great. From what I could gather the registry settings will only affect things like using windows services, uninstalling. If you just run stand-alone programs I think you should be OK. You could raise the question with ActiveState technical suppoert perhaps.

Not sure about Linix on USB, you could try the Newsgroups or the relevant EE forum.
