DHCP Question on a SBS 2003 server, server assigning ips to itself using RAS as unique ID

My server has been giving out ip addresses to itself under the unique ID of RAS.  We have a system that dials out to collect data but why would it need to get an ip address?  Perhaps they are not related and it is something else.
Any help or explanation would be great.
Thanks

Hi Frank2005,
TCP/IP is the default networking protocol in Windows 2003
usual disclaimers apply.
If you have RRAS setup for whatever reason and in that setup you left the default to use DHCP for users, what the RRAS Server does is grab 10 addresses for giving out under RRAS.  You may use none, you may use 6, etc., but the system grabs 10.  If you have an 11th connection, or it sees it needs another, then it will grab 10 more.

What you are seeing is normal.  The way around that would be to change your RRAS to a Static Pool, then it would not grab 10 DHCP addresses.

ASKER

Thanks Sam!

Do I have to change the RRAS in the reg or ....?
please post the output of ipconfig /all here, (changing public static ip or dns entries to remain anonymous) so we can see if there is a ras interface.
