Xbox ejects disk durring game play

Has anyone seen this.  My xbox(2002 vintage) recently started ejecting the disk after playing for about an hour or so.  I will be in the middle of a game and all of the sudden the disk makes some funny noises like it was just dropped on the tray at full spin and the tray starts to eject but doesn't eject smoothly and the eject button blinks.  Also a couple of weeks ago it seems that my HD got erased somehow.  All my saved games gone!  Anyone have a clue what is going on.  Are there Xbox Viruses?  I host small lan parties with 4-5 different boxes some who use Xbox Live and some without, I personally haven't been on it with my box.

I ordered the new power cord but haven't recieved it just yet It was just last week.  I am in the upper midwest US and we seem to have a very stable and adequate electrical system in place (Good ole reliable coal).

Can the Hard Drive get erased if the box gets unplugged durring play.  Maybe the Fat file gets corrupt or something.  I don't know for certain if this happened, but the first profile back on the box was when my Nephew (5yrs old) was playing unattended with other little kids running around.  so it is possible that he was playing and the box got unplugged.

I don't have any cracked games or mods so that isn't an issue.

I will be in contact with support this week.

Do you know if this could be one of the issues with the old power cord?

In a sad state of depression at the recent loss of my beloved console,

It's always possible for the file system to get corrupted -- in any hard-disk based system.  Generally, it'd be if the unit was turned off while WRITING, while reading isn't as much of an issue.  And they are consumer electronics, somewhat designed for people to do funky things like power it off at odd times.

But, while a file or two might get borked, for the whole disk to go is really a different matter entirely -- support would know what to say about that.

I feel for your loss... makes me think I should back up some savegames to memory card!

I finally was able to fix it the problem was the DVD drive.  I swapped it out with another drive from a friends broken box and all seems well.  I still haven't a clue how the drive got erased.  I am assuming it must have lost power while writing to FAT and corrupted the file it is a total guess though.
