Hi eberhardt2329,
with outlook2003 open, right click on the outlook icon in the system tray, select "show new mail desktop alert"

eberhardt2329,
to "always show" the mail icon, right click on task bar, properties, on taskbar tab click "customize", find the mail icon and "you have new unopened items" and choose "always show" as the behavior
the icon of course will go away when you've viewed all new mail
