new to java

I'm trying to make a program that will connect to the Gnutella network, but I've never used java before... I primarily do visual basic.

So I came across something called JTella. It is java code for a servant to connect to Gnutella... so my question is, how do I compile it ? and is there a way to compile it for my pocket pc?

Download the Java 2 Standard Edition Java Development Kit (J2SE JDK, currently as version 1.5 aka 5.0) from Sun http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.5.0/download.jsp and better yet, download an IDE to develop in: either NetBeans (same link as previous) or Eclipse (my preference, http://www.eclipse.org/). All the above are free. I would recommend that you also go the java section of the sun.com site and try to turtorials to get started.

To compile it for your pocket pc you would also need to download the Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME).

I downloaded J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2 after I downloaded Java 2 Standard Edition Java Development Kit, is that the same as Java 2 Micro Edition (J2ME) ?

No apparently it's not, you don't need to download J2ME if you have downloaded the J2ME WT

see here from the docs:
--------------------

System Requirements - Software

    * Microsoft Windows XP or (unsupported) Linux-x86
    * JavaTM 2 SDK, Standard Edition (J2SE SDK), version 1.4.2 - if you plan to do actual development, or JavaTM 2, Standard Edition Runtime Environment (JRE), version 1.4.2 - if you only plan to run the demonstration applications.

      To download the SDK or JRE you want, go to http://java.sun.com/j2se/downloads.html

I imported the project i'm working with into netbeans and tried to run it... but i get an error saying that there is no main class. So needless to say I'm confused...

So that you can help me more, I have posted the project on the internet so you can download it...
Heres the link: http://www.aimprofiletracker.com/jtella-07.zip

no main class exceptions result from trying to run an application that has no main method. The signature for a main method is

public static void main(String[] args)

so check for that first.
