EDI integration - where to start

We are implimenting SAP /R3 v4.7. My task is to integrate our exisitng EDI infrastructure into SAP.

Our current edi setup is like this.

edi server > bisync to VAN or Lexicom AS2 connection > retreive/send 810/850/997 > convert to proprietary file (Ebridge) for import into Great Plains

Ok, we are replacing GP with SAP. As far as I can see from some research "all i need to do" is get the edi docs into IDoc format, assume I'll have the various partner profiles setup within SAP.

Where should I start? I know about the majors like Gentran, Delta Enterprise, and SAP XI but was looking for some details on alternative methods. Perhaps mapping through scripting or otherwise.

So, if you were at the beginning of implimenting EDI into SAP where would you go? How would you do it and would you do it alone? Consultants, software etc etc.

Thanks to all in advance for your help and suggestions.

Cheers,

I haven't done this with SAP 4.7 - I have only used 4.6 but I think the same principles are true.

Personally I would use the SAP propriotory software - SAP Business Connector for 4.6 and/or XI for 4.7 - these allow a very simple integration with SAP as the RFC calls are all standard and depending on the EDI format you have then the mappings to and from the IDOC may also be there.

As for consultants - depending on your skill set, and as long as you have access to a Functinonal consultant - I can set up a standard message type in a week using SAP BC - I would expect the same with XI.

Cheers
Jon

Hi,

Middleware:
There's another EDI Gateway product used in South Africa for the last 5 years. Developed by a local company and used by the SAP Oil companies. Cost is about 10% of Gentran. (Interested?)

From the middleware into SAP depends if you would like to post documents real time with handshake, or if you would like to load data. At teh very least you would need an good ABAP'er (SAP Programmer) that has a knowledge of IDOC's(Real time posting) or RFC's (Remote Function Calling) from your middleware.

We did it with 2 SAP Consultants 1 Functional & 1 ABAP'er(myself) and the middleware company.
