for example, an outlook/exchange user send an email to a group, exchange needs to resolve this group name to send email to everyone in the group list.  would i be able to see this list?  when i access Exchange, all i get is something like "...cn/groupName ...".

You can view the members of a group in Active directory by accessing the groups properties, this will show you what users are in the group, if you are asking to see a list of people attached to a group in Outlook the following article shows how to set permisions for the opposite, by default when u create a distribution group it will have the Allow permission for Reading Members.

To test this in outlook go to tools Address Book and view the GAL right click on a group and go to properties, you will then see the members attached to that group.
